Transitions Conference 3 in Toronto, CanadaGrowing Up Ready: Building Skills for Living in the Adult World, will be held May 12 - 13, 2006 in Toronto, Canada. Early bird deadline is Friday, March 24, 2006. Register early to receive a reduced fee! This is the 3rd bi-annual conference on the subject of transitioning. The theme this year is "Growing up Ready." Based on the work with children, youth and their families, we believe that planning for transitions must start early, be real and positive with shared expectations, and hope for the future. As one parent put it; "...if your child has a disability it's called transition and for everyone else it's just growing up." We believe it is Growing Up...Ready. The question is...Ready for What? The authors analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey from 1999 to 2002. Their main conclusion is that despite increasing attention to issues of health care transition for young adults with disabling chronic conditions, this study suggests that uninsurance is as common among these young adults as peers without disabilities and is significantly associated with health care access barriers in this population. http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/content/vol160/issue2/index.dtl (may need subscription) Callahan, S.T., & Cooper, W. Hawaii Considering New Children's Health Insurance ProgramThe Hawaii House Health Committee on Thursday approved a bill (HB 3116) that would establish a 3-year pilot program to provide no-cost health insurance to children in families who do not qualify for the state's QUEST program and cannot afford private insurance. Under the proposed Keiki Care Plan, a mutual benefit society would partner with the program, and the Hawaii Medical Service Association's children's health plan would be a model for the pilot program.
